Otherwise known as SUP, paddle boarding has become one of the most popular sports in recent years and has probably been tried by more people than any other water sport out there. The reason for this is perhaps that in its simplest form it is quite accessible to all ages and people of various fitness levels. Essentially the art of paddle boarding was derived from a mixture of traditional surfing, first made popular in Hawaii, and canoeing where the craft is propelled by use of a paddle. In its simplest form, an individual needs to have a board and long handled paddle and a body of water on which to paddle! As the name suggests, the sport requires that the participant stand up on the board and use the paddle to propel them along. Most novices would find this most achievable on a calm surface which is why this is a great sport for lakes, quiet rivers and enclosed areas of sea water.

As mentioned, this sport is relatively easy to get started and requires not much in the way of equipment, which as with most sports can be hired at first whilst you ascertain your level of commitment. Depending on where you practice there is little in the way of special clothing required, although a wet suit and perhaps a life vest are a good idea if it is colder and you are likely to be in the water more frequently as you acquire a better sense of balance. Also, children need to be thus protected for their safety but once that is established the whole family could be out on the water together enjoying this activity. Obviously very young children will lack the strength and balance required but once a child can swim and feel confident why not introduce the sport gradually. For most people the attraction of starting this sport is to be out on the water and to build up one’s level of fitness. Paddle boarding is a wonderful way to build core muscles and overall fitness while enjoying the fresh air and scenery of your chosen location. Unlike hitting the gym paddle boarding combines healthy exercise with the added bonus of travel and depending on your experience level you can certainly be out and about enjoying numerous and varied locations whilst you work out! Most people that take up SUP are looking for a fun way to sight see and enjoy some quality recreation time that additionally keeps them fit. However, if you develop a deeper love for the sport and want to take it to a different level you may be tempted to try some of the variations that are a little more extreme! Get super fit and fast on your paddle board and you might want to compete in race events that can take place on lakes, rivers, canals or even in the open sea. Surfing whilst paddle boarding has also become popular and satisfies the need to take an existing sport to a whole new level. And when all this becomes too stressful remember that you can even do paddle board yoga or fishing to restore the calm to your life!
